Hudspeth, John Molton
Lewis, Cleveland S.

Cora was quite the character. I suppose being married four times (andonly 1 died on her) is probably an indication. She ran a small grocerystore on the southeast corner of the intersection of Lafayette andCherry streets in Dothan as a way to provide for her family after sheleft the country. After she and her last husband split up, she re-tookthe name Dudley because her last child (my mother) Johnnie B. was aDudley and "Mama" didn't want her growing up with a different lastname. Our fondest story about Mama is after "professional" wrestlingcame to television, she would "watch" it by turning her chair with herback to the TV and grabbing an occasional glance because it was tooviolent to watch the other way. She always had a pecan pie for me whenI was growing up!

William was born in 1853 in Henry County, Alabama. William is listedin the 1870 census of Henry County, Alabama (along with Isidor's otherchildren at the time) as is Minerva Roberts, his future wife. Williamand Minerva were married in Santa Rosa County, Florida on March 19,1874. William and Minerva had four (4) children: Edward, Ella, Oscarand Henry.

Minerva apparently died within a year of delivering their youngestchild Henry (possibly while giving birth). Henry was born in March1879 and by the 1880 Henry County, Alabama census, William along withthree of his children (Ed, Ella and Oscar) were living with Isidor.William is listed as a widower and Henry had been adopted by the C.S.Kincey family. William applied for a homestead in Geneva County, Alabama on January17, 1889 stating he took possession of the property in 1885. On March14, 1891 Sarah L E Mendheim ("widow of William P Mendheim") filedfinal papers for the homestead claim and the "homestead patent" wasissued January 18, 1892. Apparently Isidor and Judith moved relatively quickly to Henry County,Alabama as their first born William P. Mendheim was born in 1853 inAlabama. Isidor and Judith went on to have five (5) children: William,Rozelia (married William Kirkland), Isidore W., Albert and Belton. The1860 Federal Census shows Isidor (now a dentist) with wife Judith andfour children; William age 7, Rozelia age 5, Isidor (IW) age 3 andAlbert age 1 living in Henry County, Alabama. Judith's brother HenryB. Culp, age 16, was at their home.

He was part of Company A that wasnicknamed the "Henry Volunteers" as many of the men in Company A werefrom Henry County. Isidor was discharged on August 6, 1862 inColumbus, Mississippi due to medical reasons. It states that he hadRheumatism and had not been of service for the previous 60 days. Thedescription of Isidor by the discharging officer stated "He was bornin
Prussia in the State of_ _is 37 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation, whenenlisted, a dentist." Further it states, "I certify that I havecarefully examined the said Isidore Mindheim of Captain Green'sCompany and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldierbecause of Rheumatism - He has not done any service three months. And he did not return alone, but broughtwith him a yonng and blushing bride that he captured over aboutClopton. Well, Doctor, we wish you much joy; may you and the wifelive long and prosper, and may - and may - well, never mind.' - HenryCounty Register (Abbeville, Alabama Weekly Newspaper) Friday, February14, 1873

In approximately 1880 Isidor, Nancy and their children apparentlymoved to Walton County, Florida for a brief period of time. We do not know his exactage, but he was one of the oldest citizens of this country, and almostevery body knew him. He was for a long time a successful Dentist atAbbeville. A few years ago when his manhood had withered away, hemoved to the "piney woods" and settled on a little farm near herebefore Dothan was known. He has for the past few years been an objectof pity, and to see him staggering about the streets, jerking with oldage, and drawn over, would attract the sympathy and draw tears fromanyone. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and lovedhis God. He was known by hundreds of people all over this country whowill remember how he looked in his declining years. He has been knownas "old Doctor Mendheim" for the last 25 years or longer. Such washis title before the writer outgrew the swaddling clothes of aninfant. But, alas! 'tis done! And Dr. Mendheim is no more-no more onearth. May he rest with Jesus, and never know sorrow again, are thewishes that a thousand souls will join the Siftings in making today. He died poor in worldly goods, but the true riches are yet to come, and the day of his life has just begun to dawn, for "to live inChrist, and die, is gain".' - Wire-Grass Siftings (Dothan, AlabamaWeekly Newspaper) Thursday, January 22, 1891
