Jackson Brothers Cut First Road.
The very 1st transportation routes in the AL Territory & the newlyformed Henry Co., mainly followed old Indian paths. Early settlersentering the new lands, now Henry Co., stayed close to Ft. Gaines, GAfor protection from Indians. There were no roads on which to ventureinto the unsettled wilderness. Among the early settlers across theriver in the first town in Henry Co., "Franklin", were Daniel Jackson& Mathew Jackson, brothers seeking a new life in a new land circa1820. They had a 3rd brother whose name is not known. It is saidthat he lived to be 114 yrs old. Daniel & Mathew cut the very 1stroad in Henry Co. & Southeast AL in 1820. This road ran from Franklin& Ft. Gaines to Prospect Bluff, to present-day Clayton to Willaimsonto present-day Louisville & on to Sparta in Conecuh Co. It followedon the south side of the Indian boundary line est. in 1814 when theIndian Wars ended & the Indians were to stay north of this boundaryline. The new road was crude & small in width, but should not beunderestimated. It was the main factor in the early growth ofSoutheast AL until circa 1830. The road was called the "Plank Road"because timbers & planks were laid down on parts of the road to makeit passable for wagons.
Daniel & Mathew also built the 1st house in Abbeville, out of skinnedpine logs. By 1823, this place was a growing village of substantialresidents. Daniel Jackson was born in SC in 1789 & died in Henry Co.,AL on Nov. 25, 1892. He is buried in the Mt. Zion Primitive BaptistChurch Cemetery. This is the oldest active church in Henry Co.Daniel was 103 yrs old, retaining his vigorous health & clearintellect until his death.
