The following extracts are from letters that were in the posssessionof Bathurst Lee Smith, Esq., of Knoxville, Tenn. From an unfinishedletter written by Gov. Geo. William Smith shortly before his death -
"Inclosed you will find a copy of the paper entitled The AmericanCrisis, which was written by my father [Meriwether4 Smith] in 1776,and also of the notes enclosed of the proceedings which were thenmoved by himself and adopted by the General Assembly, and which may beseen in the Journal of that session. I have also the originalmanuscript of the Bill of Rights as written by him. Besides these, Ifind among his papers many others, that you may choose to peruse atyour leisure, respecting alliance with France, of which he was inCongress the most zealous, and not the least powerful, advocate; thenegotiations for peace; the instructions relative to both, which weredrawn by him; reflections upon the report of the Secretary of theTreasury relative to the funding system, &c., &c., and which I willwith pleasure furnish. The copy inclosed in intended for your ownperusal. However, I should not object to your friend Mr. Strodeseeing it; but as hitherto I have had, so now I have, reasons why Ishould not show his papers, or speak generally of the services of myfather in the commencement of and during the Revolution. Theevidences of his patriotism show that it was not less influential indirecting and fixing the destinies of his country than it was bold andmanly and honourable for himself".
