SUFFOLK - Dr. Ramona Hartley Mapp, formerly of Portsmouth, VA died onSaturday, January 8, 2011, in a Suffolk Hospital. A native ofHeadland, Alabama, she had lived in the Hampton Roads area since 1962,and lived in the Churchland area of Portsmouth from 1971 until shemoved to Lake Prince Woods retirement community in 2009. She was aretired educator, community leader, and homemaker. Dr. Mapp had adiverse education. She attended public schools in Alabama and Floridaand began her college education at the University of London, England.She also attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL, and IndianaUniversity. She earned bachelors and masters degrees in English fromOld Dominion University, where she taught English for several yearsand helped found the Delta Sigma Lambda sorority. She earned adoctorate in education from Virginia Tech. She inspired students andfaculty at Tidewater Community Colleges Portsmouth campus from 1971 to1995, serving as professor of English, English Department chair, andchair of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. Dr. Mapp wasactive in numerous educational, civic, cultural, political, and churchorganizations. She was president of the South Atlantic Association ofDepartments of English, of the Tidewater Child Care Center, of youngAudiences of Virginia, and of the Friends of the Portsmouth PublicLibrary. She chaired the Portsmouth Library board, was regent of theFort Nelson chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, andfounded and headed the TLC (Tender Loving Care) Committee ofChurchland Baptist Church, where she also taught Sunday and was adeacon. She was a member of the American Association of UniversityWomen, the Poetry Society of Virginia, and the Jamestown Society. Shewas named an Outstanding Tidewater Professional Women, received aFriend of the Arts Award, and was listed in Whos Who Among AmericanWomen. She loved Portsmouth and the Hampton Roads area, where shemoved after living in various regions of the U.S. and in London,England. She co-authored Portsmouth: A Pictorial History with herhusband of 39 years, Dr. Alf Johnson Mapp, Jr, who survives her. Shewas a wonderful partner to him, as she was to her first husband,Colonel Malcolm C. Hamby USAF, who died in 1967. Dr. Mapp waspredeceased by her parents, Smith Culp Bud Hartely and Annie Bess KitHartley of Tumbleton, AL, and by siblings Erlene Dykes Culp, HerbertJake Dykes, and Colin Dykes. She is survived by her sister, SueHartley Ward, of Headland, AL. Dr. Mapp is also survived by her sons,Gregory Stuart Hamby (wife Linda Moon) of Kitty Hawk, NC, and GeoffreyAlan Hamby (wife Pamela Thurman) of Falls Church, VA, and herstepsons, Alf Johnson Mapp, III, of Portsmouth, VA. She is survived bygranddaughter Ramona Hamby Tyabut and husband Constantin Tyabut of St.Petersburg Russia and Kitty Hawk, N.C. and grandsons ChristopherMalcolm Hamby and Nicholas Conner Hamby of Falls Church. Survivorsalso include step-granddaughters Allison Adams Jones and Nicole AdamsGeddie of Kitty Hawk and step-granddaughters Katie Anne Ley and RachelLauren Ley of Falls Church. She is also survived by many nieces,nephews, cousins, and friends. Dr. Mapp was a wonderful hostess andcook who provided delightful hospitality for her extended family andfriends. She was an extremely articulate person with many interests,being an international traveler, a lover of Shakespearian drama andother theater, a concert goer, a museum and art lover, a donor to theVirginia Symphony and other arts organizations, and an avid reader ofthe poetry of Chaucer, Donne, and Milton, as well as contemporaryfiction and nonfiction. Dr. Mapp was a lovely lady who brought out thebest in people,she will be missed.
