Benjamin and another Mendheim, recorded as Fedor, came to the USthrough the Port of New York on October 14, 1841 arriving on the shipHoward from Hamburg. In November 1841 Benjamin and Isidor placed an adin the Augusta Chronical looking for their brother Ernest (Emil) whowas reported to have been living in the area in 1840-1841. This adsays they are from Cüstrin, Prussia.
It appears that Benjamin had established a residence in Columbus,Georgia not long after his arrival. Sometime between 1841 and 1850 hemarried Adeline Simmons of New York. They were in the Columbus,Georgia 1850 Federal Census of Muscogee County. Benjamin'snaturalization was recorded in Book E of the Superior Court ofMuscogee County (Columbus) Georgia on November 28, 1848. Also,Benjamin was listed as a slave owner in Columbus in 1850. Benjamin wasin Augusta, Georgia in 1870 listed as Philip Mendheim in the FederalCensus. The census shows Philip with his wife and three children,Louis, Maurice and Pauline, ages 13 to 17. Since the children wereborn in Missouri and Tennessee, it appears Benjamin moved quite a bit,having lived in four states within a twenty year period. Also, thereis a B. Mendheim on the 1865-1866 tax roles of South Carolina. In the1880 Federal Census Benjamin is in Allendale, South Carolina.Ultimately, they wound up in New York City and Benjamin died thereJune 1888 with Adeline's death following in 1902.
